An Introduction to HSMP

Main Criteria ( as of December 2006 )
HSMP is a points based scheme which means that you don’t need to get a job before coming to the UK to work. It is aimed at skilled and experienced people who will have little difficulty in finding a job and will clearly be of benefit to the UK economy. The main points categories are qualification and previous earnings, with additional points also available for age (so that younger people stand a better chance) and UK experience. You can also qualify if you have an MBA from one of the top business schools. In order to qualify you must obtain 75 points. Points are awarded in the following scoring areas:

1. Graduate level qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree - 30 points
  • Master's degree - 35 points
  • PhD - 50 points
  • Top 50 MBA - 75 Points

2. Previous Earnings
Between 5 and 45 points can be awarded, according to your level of earnings and the country where you work. Please contact us for more details

3. Age Assessment
This category addresses the fact that younger applicants are less likely to be on a high level of earnings. Points are awarded as follows:
  • Age 27 or under - 20 points
  • Age 28 or 29 - 10 points
  • Age 30 or 31 - 5 points
  • Age 32 or over - 0 points
4. UK Experience

If you have worked or studied in the UK for the whole of the last 12 months - 5 points

5. MBA Provision
If you obtained an MBA in one of the world's top business schools recently you will automatically qualify for HSMP. The 50 eligible schools in alphabetical order

English Language
Each applicant must have a good knowledge of English and is required to provide evidence here. This is defined as either:
  • IELTS Band 6 or above, or
  • A Bachelors degree that has been taught in English
Visas and Passport Endorsement

Once the application has been approved you will need to get your passport endorsed. If you are abroad this means you must go to the nearest British mission to apply for a visa for yourself and any dependent relatives.

If you are in the UK you will need to send your passport to the Home Office to ask them to change your immigration status. In some cases, for example if you are here as a visitor, you will not be permitted to change your status. If this is the case you should return to your usual country of residence and apply at the British mission near to where you live.

In either case you will need to show that you have sufficient funds and accommodation to maintain yourself. This will be particularly important if you have not received a job offer.

Extensions

HSMP visas are normally given for an initial period of two years. After this period you will effectively be required to make the application again. This will be particularly important if, as in most cases, you relied on your previous level of earnings in order to qualify for HSMP. This means that you may no longer qualify if you were unable to find a reasonably well paid job in the UK.

Please note, though, that there are different arrangements if you initially had a visa for 12 months or less under HSMP.
